SAMHSA CTRS Trainings

Substance Abuse Mental Heath Services Administration (SAMHSA)
, Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) in collaboration with NNAAPC aim to demonstrate HIV prevention counseling is the most accessible of all HIV prevention interventions.

The effectiveness of Counseling, Testing, Referral Services (CTRS) as an intervention to increase one’s awareness of HIV risks and status, hinges on whether it is appropriate to the clients’ culture, language, sex, sexual orientation, age and developmental level (CDC, 2001).  In other words, the willingness to adapt the way one works to fit the client’s culture leads to valuable interactions and better health results.

With so many discouraging statistics about Native communities it is important to remember that Native communities maintain skills, health practices, sources of renewal, and supportive relationships that have allowed them to survive.

Building upon the strengths of an AI/AN community can lead to appropriate adaptations and integration of CTRS to best serve the community. If you are interested in free HIV testing kits, please contact SAMHSA at (240) 276-1653.
